This year's focus is on Earth Science. Students will develop an understanding of geological time scales and also of Earth's three-dimensional inner and surface structures. You will study how the Earth's atmosphere and oceans influence local, regional and global weather and climate patterns.
The course concludes with an introduction to Space Science in term three.
授業の進め方・学習方法
The focus of this course is on Earth Science.
Students will develop scientific literacy skills in these areas: learning how to read science texts and reports; writing clear and accurate lab reports and notes; using trusted online information sources; and applying the scientific method throughout the course.
Labs will be held weekly and will cover both Science 1 and Science 2 topics.

The Earth's internal structure. Plate tectonics and the Earth's topography. How earthquakes occur. How volcanoes occur. Igneous rocks made from magma. STUDY POINT: Plate Tectonics explains many of the Earth's crustal movements. We will study how the movement of these plates causes earthquakes and volcanoes. |

Surface changes on the Earth. The changing continents. Earth's geological past. Rock types and strata. STUDY POINT: Scientists have studied the geological changes on Earth using timescales from tens of thousands of years up to many millions of years; and from its formation, about 4.6 billion years ago to recent times. |

The Earth's heat budget. General circulation of the atmosphere and oceans. Environmental changes in the atmosphere and oceans. STUDY POINT: The mid-term exam will focus on how the changing weather is a result of heat transfer by both air and ocean currents. |

The changing weather. Japan's weather. STUDY POINT: The importance of large-scale air masses (and their movements) to Japan's weather will be explored. |

Space science, including celestial bodies, Earth and the solar system, stars, galaxies, and the size of the universe. The movements of celestial bodies. STUDY POINT: The solar system will be studied from the perspective of an Earth-based observer, and also from that of an observer in outer space. |
