This year we will watch, engage critically with and explore a wide range of film, including films from different cultural perspectives and films from the Silent Era to the present day, in order to develop and sustain confident, personal responses to film via textual analysis.
Assessment objectives:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of elements of film
- Apply knowledge and understanding of elements of film to analyse and compare films, including through the use of critical approaches
- Evaluate the significance of critical approaches
- Analyse and evaluate own work in relation to other professionally produced work
- Apply knowledge and understanding of elements of film to the production of a film
授業の進め方・学習方法
We will:
- explore the contexts in which films are made, distributed and viewed, including social, cultural, historical, institutional, technological and political contexts
- develop a working knowledge of the language and syntax of film
- consider film as an aesthetic medium
- interrogate how concepts such as narrative, genre, representation, spectatorship and aesthetics are used to generate meaning
- evaluate the different ways in which spectators respond to film
- apply a variety of critical approaches to film
- produce a short film

Film History and Analysis (the frame) Students will study six films from a wide variety of genres and countries. We will be focusing on everything that is in-frame and outside the frame including shot distance and length, blocking, lighting, sound and editing. Directors we will study may include some of the following directors: John Ford, Yasujiro Ozu, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Jean Renoir, Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Josef von Sternberg, Ida Lupino, Abbas Kiarostami, Barbara Loden and others. |

Film History and Analysis (performance) Students will study two films, with specific focus on aspects of performance. We will discuss traditional film acting and the model style. Directors we will study can include some of the following directors: Howard Hawks, John Cassavetes, Kelly Reichardt, Leo McCarey, Elaine May, Robert Bresson, Aki Kaurismaki, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Takeshi Kitano and others. |

Critical Approaches to Film Students will continue to develop their critical approach to films. We will watch a number of films in consideration of themes such as doubles, groups, dreams, cinematic violence. We will also consider alternate methods for narrative filmmaking. Directors we will study can include some of the following directors: Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Alain Resnais, Alfred Hitchcock, Nobuhiko Obayashi, Hong Sang-Soo, Federico Fellini, Lucrecia Martel, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Luis Bunuel, Shinji Somai and others. |

Experimental Cinema and Making a Short Film Students will study a selection of experimental avant-garde and non-narratives films in order to further develop an understanding of the narrative conventions of the short film, how dramatic qualities are constructed through a range of narrative devices, and how narrative can convey the points of view of the filmmaker and the spectator. Students will also work on their own films, inspired by the films we have watched throughout the year. |

担当者からのアドバイス
Students will be expected to view at least one film each week and to write about it in a journal, so it is important to keep on top of the work and prepare fully for classes. I am sure we will have a fascinating and stimulating year studying some amazing films!
