到達目標
A course of study developing an understanding of the ways that we approach the interactions between the self, cultural products and society. You will learn to think about how you interact with socio-cultural products such as art, literature, music, film, and other representations of reality and current as well as historical events, and the effects these products have on your own development in the context of the culture you inhabit.
授業の進め方・学習方法
Activities in class will be centerd on extracts from texts by key thinkers in cultural theory. Once the students have established an understanding of a range of approaches to cultural products, they will be given opportunities to apply those ideas to texts and / or images through discussion.
Assessment will take the form of formal writing about text and / or image in the context of the theories approached. Examinations will also apply cultural theory to specific works.

Concerning the individual's place in society. Students will encounter the ideas of Michel Foucault, Guy Debord, Michel de Certeau and Herbert Marcuse. Point of learning: How do the goals of society govern our behavior? How is it possible to live a life of one's own? |

Concerning ideas of mental health. Students will encounter the ideas of Michel Foucault, Julia Kristeva, R D Laing and Bernard Stiegler. Point of learning: What do we base our ideas of sanity on? How might we approach a greater understanding of ourselves and of others? |

Concerning ideas of repression and liberation Students will encounter the ideas of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray. Points of learning: Why do we repress our selves? How can we approach liberation? |
