到達目標


The students in this course will be taught to use English to communicate in the modern world. They will be able to speak English in a natural, confident way to express their ideas and exchange opinions and information. They will also be able to start to use English to study academic subjects. In particular, instructions for classes taken in English will be emphasized. Focus in the first year will be on English for clear communication and empowering students to control the speed and direction of the conversation. This is a four skills course, but the majority of class time will be spent on improving students' speaking skills. Emphasis is placed on Global English rather than UK or US English.

授業の進め方・学習方法


Whilst students will be using Connectivity Level 2 Student's Book abd Interactive eBook as the core text for this course, they will be also be using a variety of supplementary materials, games, language activities and pronunciation aids. To improve listening students will be using a variety of independently developed material. Students will also be encouraged to complete self-study materials which include grammar, vocabulary building and writing exercises. Students will also give presentations throughout the course. There will be a new focus on extensive reading this year, so students will be asked to read as many English books as possible as well as regularly watch news in English.

In the first half of the first term we will be focussing on the English for getting to know someone, how to cheer up a friend, discussing differences among siblings, and discussing friendship. We will look at gerunds and infinitives, gerunds after prepositions, and negative gerunds and infinitives. We will then move on to the language for sharing life experiences, catching up with old friends, suggesting tourist activities, describing customs and talking about memorable experiences. We will look at the simple past tense and the present perfect, especially for indefinite time in the past using ever, before, yet, never and already.

After the midterm exam, we will be talking about movies, apologizing about being late, choosing a movie to watch, expressing an opinion about a movie and discussing what makes a movie great. We will be looking at the present perfect with for and since, as well as other uses. We will also look at would rather for expressing preferences. After that we will learn how to leave and take phone messages, check in and out of a hotel, request services in a hotel, as well as choosing vacation accommodations. The grammar focus will be on the future with will and the real conditional.

In term 2, we will look at shopping and fashion. This includes asking for something in a store, making an appointment for personal care, discussing cosmetic procedures and defining inner and outer beauty. We will work on quantifiers for indefinite quantities and amounts:some and any. We will also be looking at indefinite pronouns:someone, no one, anyone. Eating well will be the next topic: making excuses for declining food, describing changes in eating habits and tastes, discussing diet choices and describing favorite dishes in detail. An interesting grammar point is the difference between use to and used to.Some work will also be done on negative yes/no questions.

After the midterms we will talk about cars and driving: reasons for getting a new car, describing and accident, renting a car and discussing good and bad driving habits. This is really just a way of talking about unfinished or continuing actions with the present perfect continuous tense. The past continuous will also feature in this unit. Heading up to the winter break and the finals, we will discuss doing the right thing: returning someone's property, discussing ethical choices, describing good and bad character traits and talking about honesty. To develop these ideas we will learn how to use Which/Whose and possessive pronouns, as well as the unreal conditional.

In this short third term the main focus will be on enjoying the arts, commenting on a piece of art, asking about and describing objects, describing what makes art appealing and recommending a place to enjoy arts. The main grammar focus will be the passive voice for both present and past and how to make questions in the passive. we will also spend some time on transitive and intransitive verbs. If we have some time left the final topic maybe a look at troubleshooting problems with devices and comparing software using the infinitive of purpose and comparisons with as ...as ...

Two kinds of test will be given: speaking and writing. The writing tests will be held during the regular test periods. The speaking tests are not summative, but formative in nature, so will be held throughout the term.
